{"id":7458,"date":"2011-05-18T12:27:09","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T12:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wendywolfe.wordpress.com\/?p=204"},"modified":"2011-05-18T12:27:09","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T12:27:09","slug":"kittens-and-thoughts-from-momma-kitty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wendywolfe.com\/?p=7458","title":{"rendered":"Kittens and thoughts from Momma Kitty"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_205\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wendywolfe.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/kittens-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-205\" title=\"kittens web\" src=\"http:\/\/wendywolfe.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/kittens-web.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kittens sleeping while Momma is out hunting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We have kittens, five little kittens that are about 3 weeks old.\u00a0 When you live on a farm and have outdoor cats, you naturally end up with more cats who find their way to your place\u2026which is what happened to us.<\/p>\n<p>Momma kitty showed up along with a black and white tom cat we named Patches.\u00a0 Momma kitty is feral and hasn\u2019t let us get more than 4 or 5 feet from her but she is friends with Patches and our neutered male, Red.\u00a0 She has been brave enough to come up to the deck.<\/p>\n<p>We suspected right away that she was pregnant.\u00a0 We knew one option was to live trap her and take her in to be spayed which would have terminated the pregnancy.\u00a0 But when I got quiet and asked what we should do, I heard, \u201clet her have the kittens\u201d.\u00a0 Once they are old enough we will trap her and have her spayed.\u00a0 Patches will be neutered too.\u00a0 This is life in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She originally had the kittens in the hay shed where we build tunnels in the hay to provide warm nests for the cats in the winter.\u00a0\u00a0 She had them tucked in one of the tunnels.\u00a0 We respected her privacy and tried to be very quiet while in the shed.\u00a0 Eventually she moved them from the hay tunnel and put them under a pallet that had supported hay bales.\u00a0 Her next move was out of the hay shed and in a space in the horses\u2019 lean-to attached to the barn.\u00a0 Between the metal side of the barn and the pine wall that lines the lean-to is a space of about 10\u201d.\u00a0 The wall is about 4 feet high.\u00a0 Becky saw her move them and then I was able to peek at the kittens for the first time.\u00a0 Sadly, I could see there was one little calico runt who looked near death.\u00a0 That evening, the littlest had passed.\u00a0 Momma kitty moved them again to the same space only on the other side of the lean-to.<\/p>\n<p>Today I decided to talk with Momma Kitty.\u00a0 I wanted to know if there was anything we could do for her and to let her know (again) we only want to help her and the kittens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy:<\/strong>\u00a0 We want to help you and we want you to know we would never harm you or your babies.\u00a0 We think you are a very good mother and doing a wonderful job.\u00a0 Are you sad about the kitten that died?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Momma Kitty:<\/strong>\u00a0 My concern is for the ones who are alive\u2026that\u2019s why I moved them.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want them to become ill\u2026they need me.\u00a0 Thank you for the food it has been helpful.\u00a0 I prefer what I catch but with an easy source of food I don\u2019t have to work as hard and my babies get more milk from me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you find us?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Momma Kitty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Patches told me there was food, water and a warm place here.\u00a0\u00a0 I think Red told him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is Patches the father of the babies?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Momma Kitty:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you know there is a fox near here?\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t want you or the babies to get caught by the fox.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Momma Kitty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we all know.\u00a0 We are careful but I don\u2019t think the fox is a real threat, I can out maneuver him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want you to know that I can hear the animals, including you so if you ever need anything, please call on me.\u00a0 We want you and your kittens to have a happy healthy life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Momma Kitty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 I am beginning to trust you humans but I am not quite ready to be touched yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, we will respect that.\u00a0 Please let me know if you need help.<\/p>\n<p>I love that Momma Kitty is focusing on taking care of the kittens she has and not on the one who was lost.\u00a0 We can all learn something from her&#8230;
