Today I’m sharing how to keep from getting overwhelmed, anxious, depressed*, angry and all those other pesky emotions we prefer not to feel on a regular basis. It’s my go-to daily Spiritual practice and it keeps me in the flow.
Being a highly sensitive empath means we require more self care than others. Our sensitive energy field needs TLC on a daily basis. When we don’t take time for self-care life can get wonky. Caring for our energy body is actually simple and can also be FUN.
Set yourself up for happiness and peace by committing to a daily spiritual practice. Yes, really. You can do this. It doesn’t need to take hours from your day and it doesn’t need to be frustrating or drudgery.
When you engage in a spiritual practice each day you open yourself up to love (and I’m not talking about romantic love).
When you are open to love, the other states of anxiety, depression, etc won’t take hold. You cannot be in a state of love and hold onto fearful states at the same time. Just like you can’t be in Texas when you are in New York (well you could but that’s a metaphysical discussion for another time).
So you want to get rid of overwhelm and anxiety?
Open to love.
“How do I open myself up to love, you ask? I’m a loving person, aren’t I already open to love?”
I’m glad you asked.
To open to love means raising your energetic vibration. We are all energetic beings and vibrate at different rates at different times. All of those states we don’t like, anger, fear, anxiety, and depression are of a lower vibration. Love is high. Love is at the top (followed closely by joy and gratitude).
To shift your vibration and open yourself up to love you can do several things. Stay with me here….it’s going to be easier than you think. It doesn’t need to be complicated or time consuming.
You don’t need to go to a mountain or sell all your worldly goods.
You could meditate but there are other ways that are easier, more fun, quicker and for many of us more effective. Try adding one of these to your day.
Drumming and Chanting
The vibration of drumming and chanting can open your chakras and move your energy. The sound vibrations resonate through every cell in your body stimulating the release of negative energy stuck on a cellular level. Your cells begin to vibrate in harmony and energy flows freely through you.
You can choose to listen to recorded drumming and chanting or do the drumming and chanting yourself. For recorded drumming or chanting there are many CD’s available. There are also many options on You Tube that don’t require a purchase. Google shamanic drumming, healing drumming, etc and see what resonates for you. If you find an artist that works great for you then you can purchase the music. I’ve put links to some of my favorites at the bottom of this article.
Another powerful practice is to drum (think indigenous people). Drumming has been used for thousands of years to create states of euphoria, induce light trance, release anger and raise your overall vibration. Repetitive drumming moves the energy in our bodies. Studies show that drumming raises your alpha brain waves…the brain waves you activate with meditation. The paradox is that drumming can move you out of time and space (altered state) while still keeping you grounded and in the present. This is very powerful.
Fortunately, you don’t need any training. You only need a drum. Begin hitting the drum and see what wants to flow. Be forewarned it can startle the dogs and cats initially. In my experience they get used to it pretty quickly. If you’ve chosen this as your early morning spiritual practice you will of course need to consider the other people you share your home with. A quieter option for early morning is to use headphones and listen to a CD of drumming or chanting. Headphones also amplify the vibration shift.
Even more powerful is to participate in a drumming circle although this takes us out of the realm of the daily spiritual practice. The resonance from many drums and other energy fields amplifies the effect. It’s a great way to be in community with others but doesn’t replace a daily practice.
My personal practice is to listen to a CD of drumming or chanting first thing in the morning. I keep my favorite CD’s, a small CD player and headphones in my nightstand. I wake up at 5:30 (because the dogs want to go out), let them out and then go back to bed with the headphones on. In thirty minutes or an hour my body is set for a good day. Then several days a week I will also drum or chant because actually moving the sounds through your own body is also very powerful.
If you can, do whichever practice you choose early in the morning before checking email, before breakfast for the kids, or walking the dogs.
When I fall out of my practice (we all tend to do this from time-to-time) life gets harder. Shifting back to the practice just takes a moment to pick up the drum or put in the CD. Let me know how it works for you.

*Clinical depression may not respond to a Spiritual practice and when we are in deep despair to even have the thought to engage is often beyond our means. If you suffer from deep depression, please seek professional help. I have been in the black hole and I truly understand how debilitating it can be.
